Have you heard the quote, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”? It’s a quote by Jim Rohn, an American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker. It’s a quote I am quite familiar with and have heard numerous times before. Many people come in and out of your life over the years, but it’s the ones you keep around that are most important. Make a choice to be around successful people and you’ll likely find success yourself. Here are a few qualities you may want to look for when building your close group of friends.
Friendship Qualities That Build Success
- Have similar goals as you
- Have a positive energy
- Honesty & trustworthiness, even when it’s the hard truth
- Listen and offer help/advice when necessary
- Challenge you to be your best
There are most likely a few other qualities that could be added to this list, but I see these as some of the most crucial elements. Now, you may be asking yourself how a friend like this would improve your own success. Well, simply put, I believe the people you surround yourself with have contagious qualities. Start spending all your time with people who play video games and eat junk food all day, what do you think you will start doing? Conversely, if you spend all your time with people who have built success in an area of interest to you, you’ll eventually find that success yourself. Surround yourself with great people who guide and motivate you to realize your true potential.
Building My Circle of Friends
Over the years, I have made some great friends. Some have drifted away, but others have remained very close, regardless of distance and time. Moving to Austin Texas however, has given me the chance to start over. Sure, making friends can be difficult when you’re older, but like anything else, if you put in the effort, you’ll find success. Since moving here, I have made a few friends and have enjoyed my new social life with some good people. However, where I’m finding a void in my life is connecting with others who have similar goals. At this point, I’m practically obsessed with entrepreneurial ventures and multifamily real estate to build passive income for an early retirement. I believe, by seeking out others who have similar goals, my dream will come closer to a reality. To summarize the minimum of what I’m looking for, it would be great to find the following:
What I’m seeking:
- A more experienced friend (mentor)
- A friend on the same level as me (peer)
- Someone I can help with their goals (mentee)
This will take time and effort, but I believe the more I surround myself with successful, driven people, the more successful I will become. Like I said before, the people you surround yourself with have contagious qualities, who do you choose to surround yourself with? Leave a comment below!
